Cold.
That was the first thing. A deep, biting cold that soaked into her skin, seeped into her bones. Elara’s eyes fluttered open to a world of grey. Grey ceiling, grey walls, grey floor. She was lying on her back, completely naked, on a slab of metal that leached the heat from her body.
Panic, sharp and immediate, seized her. She shot up, the movement jarring her aching head. The room was small, featureless. A seamless cube with no visible door. A faint hum vibrated through the floor, a low thrum that she felt in her teeth. The air smelled wrong. Clean, too clean, like the aftermath of a lightning strike—ozone and something else underneath. A faint, musky scent that was animal and alien.
Her last memory was a flash of light in a dark parking lot. The sound of her keys hitting the asphalt. Then… nothing. Now this.
A section of the wall slid open with a soft hiss, revealing not a hallway, but two figures that filled the opening. They were tall, impossibly so, their bodies encased in smooth, dark grey armor that hugged lean, powerful muscle. Their faces were bare. Skin the color of wet stone, high cheekbones, and wide, black eyes that held no discernible emotion. They were completely impassive, their stillness more terrifying than any overt threat.
Elara scrambled backward on the slab, her bare ass scraping against the cold metal. "Who are you? Where am I?" Her voice was a raw croak.
They didn't answer. They moved in unison, their steps silent on the strange floor. One stood at the foot of the slab, his gaze empty. The other came to her side. He reached for her.
She flinched back, a wild animal instinct taking over. "Don't touch me!"
Her scream echoed in the sterile room. The being didn't even blink. His hand, large and cool, closed around her upper arm. His grip was firm, not painful, but absolute. There was no breaking it. She struggled, twisting her body, but it was like fighting against a mountain. He lifted her from the slab as if she weighed nothing.
Her feet touched the floor, and a shiver wracked her entire frame. The other male moved behind her, his presence a wall of silent intimidation. They guided her forward, one hand on her arm, one at the small of her back. She was herded like livestock. Every instinct screamed at her to fight, to claw and bite, but a cold, heavy dread settled in her stomach. It was useless. The sheer, effortless strength radiating from them told her so.
They walked her through the opening into another, larger room. This one was all white tiles and chrome fixtures. Nozzles lined the walls. A cleansing chamber. The male released her arm and gave her a gentle but firm push into the center of the room. The wall hissed shut behind her, leaving her alone again.
Before she could process it, a warm mist sprayed from the nozzles, coating her skin. It smelled of antiseptic and strange, alien flowers. It was followed by a thick, lathery foam that covered her from head to toe, slick and invasive. She stood frozen, humiliated, as the foam worked its way into every crease and fold of her body. Then came the rinse, a powerful jet of water that sluiced the foam away, leaving her skin tingling and raw. Finally, a blast of hot, dry air buffeted her, leaving not a single drop of moisture on her skin or in her long, brown hair.
The process was brutally efficient. Dehumanizing.
The wall slid open again. The same two males were waiting. One held out a simple, thin grey tunic, but he didn't give it to her. He held it open, waiting. She stared at him, defiance a hot lump in her throat. He just waited, his black eyes patient. With a shudder of revulsion, she stepped into the garment. It was flimsy, barely covering her, the fabric doing nothing to warm her.
They led her back into the first room, to the metal slab. This time, they guided her to lie down on her back. A low hum intensified, and a bar of light descended from the ceiling, hovering a foot above her body. It began to move slowly, deliberately, from her head down to her toes. A scanner.
Her mind recoiled. It was cataloging her. An inventory of her parts.
She closed her eyes, but she could feel the light passing over her, and in her head, she saw what it saw. Her long brown hair, fanned out against the cold metal. The sprinkle of freckles across her shoulders, something she’d always secretly liked. Now they just felt like imperfections being recorded. The light crept lower, over her breasts. They were C-cups, full and round, but now they felt terribly exposed. Her nipples, already tight from the cold and fear, puckered into hard, aching points under the scanner’s unfeeling gaze. She imagined a diagram appearing on some unseen screen, measurements and data points.
The light passed over the soft curve of her belly, a part of herself she was always a little self-conscious about. She felt a wave of shame so profound it was nauseating. The scan continued, over the flare of her hips, down her thighs, to her feet. An object being assessed. A piece of meat being graded.
When it was done, the light retracted into the ceiling. A voice filled the room. It was calm, female, and disembodied, speaking perfect English with a strange, melodic cadence.
"Subject designation: Elara. Human female. Age: twenty-four standard years."
Elara’s breath hitched.
"Your biological and genetic markers have been cross-referenced against the Imperial database," the voice continued, its tone serene and utterly chilling. "You have been found compatible."
"Compatible for what?" Elara whispered, the words scraping her throat.
"You are on Zorya, capital of the Breed Empire. You have been selected for the Proving. A ritual to determine the next carrier for the royal bloodline. Your species’ reproductive viability and genetic resilience make you a prime candidate."
The Breed Empire. The Proving. The words were nonsense, but the meaning was terrifyingly clear. They wanted to use her. To breed her.
"No," she said, her voice shaking but gaining strength. "No. I don't consent. You can't do this."
"Consent is not a factor," the voice replied, without a hint of malice. It was a simple statement of fact. "Your body has been chosen. If it proves receptive during the trials, you will be given the great honor of birthing the next heir to the throne. You will be elevated."
"And if I'm not receptive?" she spat, fury overriding the fear. "If I fail your fucking trials?"
There was a slight pause. "Unsuitable vessels are discarded. They serve no further purpose."
Discarded. The word hung in the sterile air like a death sentence. Her life was reduced to a single function. A purpose she would die for refusing. A raw scream built in her chest, but she swallowed it down. She wouldn’t give them the satisfaction.
The two attendants flanked her again, lifting her to her feet. They led her out of the room, this time down a long, dark corridor. The air changed again, growing warmer, thicker. That musky, alien scent was stronger here, coiling in her lungs, making her head feel light.
The corridor opened into a vast, circular chamber that stole her breath. The ceiling was a dome of shimmering, black crystal that seemed to show a starfield. The floor was polished obsidian, reflecting the starlight like a dark mirror. And in the absolute center of the immense space, on a throne carved from what looked like a single, massive piece of black, pulsing stone, sat a man.
No, not a man. A being.
He was Zoryan, like the attendants, but where they were blank slates, he was a masterpiece of terrifying perfection. He was larger, his shoulders broader under a tunic of shimmering, dark silver fabric. His skin was the same cool grey, but it seemed to glow with vitality. His face was sculpted, all harsh angles and predatory grace, his black hair swept back from a high forehead. He wasn't just a ruler; he was the apex of his species, radiating an aura of absolute power that pressed down on her, making it hard to breathe.
He didn’t move a muscle as her two escorts brought her to a halt twenty feet from the base of his throne. She stood there, small and pathetic in her thin tunic, a specimen on display.
His eyes, darker than the space between stars, lifted and settled on her.
It wasn't a leer. It wasn't lustful. It was worse. His gaze was a physical force, cold and analytical, as it swept over her. It was the look of a scientist examining a specimen, a farmer assessing livestock. He took in her trembling form, the way her flimsy tunic clung to her body. His eyes lingered for a moment on her face, then tracked down, over her neck, her shoulders, the plain swell of her breasts beneath the grey cloth.
A shiver went through her, but this one was different. It wasn't from the cold. A strange, unwelcome heat prickled her skin under his inspection. He saw everything. He saw her fear, her defiance, and he saw the way her body was already betraying her. His gaze dropped lower, and she felt a shameful tightening deep in her belly.
His eyes rose again to meet hers. For a long second, he just watched her. He saw the way she shivered, the goosebumps that rose on her arms. He saw the way her nipples, even through the thin fabric, had hardened into tight, aching peaks under the weight of his stare. It was a small thing, an involuntary reaction of flesh and nerve, but in that vast, silent room, it felt like a total confession. A surrender.
A flicker of something—not approval, not satisfaction, but something close to it—passed through his dark eyes. He lifted a single, long-fingered hand, the movement economical and precise. A flick of his wrist.
An order given without a word.
The calm, disembodied voice echoed through the chamber, sealing her fate.
"Begin the Priming."
